Champion S178 Cotton Max Crewneck Sweatshirt

It’s as close to 100% cotton as you can find these days, with only 10% being polyester. I bought an XL for my husband for Xmas knowing it would shrink when washed. He was frustrated by not being able to find a 199% cotton crewneck sweatshirt any more, and his old 199% Chanpion sweatshirt was literally in tatters.so I bought this... Unwashed it was too big. After one washing, it was the perfect size. He loved it so much we’ve now ordered two more. Champion is a great brand. Please don’t ever change...

This one is going to be about as close as you're going to get to those sweat shirts of yesteryear. Why on earth 100% cotton can not be made like they did in the `40's thru the `80's is beyond me. They taunt 'fleece' when all that is is polyester crapola that causes static electricity like crazy. This particular sweat is 85% Cotton and 15% Poly which is 'close' to the 90/10 they advertise. Where I come from and live anything polyester makes you sweat in the summer and causes static electricity in the winter, there is nothing like good ole cotton and there is no shortage of cotton being grown on earth contrary to beliefs that it is.

I ordered the "womens Royal Blue L". The photo is of a young man, though, and that describes the fit: tunic length on me (5'2"), very wide shoulders, and very long arms. The biggest letdown is the fabric- NOT thick, more of a spring wear, and I wanted a good heavy cotton. The only reason I'll keep this is to knock around the house. Why is it so difficult to find a good heavyweight womens' sweatshirt?

Well I can see that the reviews tend to be mixed, I absolutely love this sweatshirt. I ordered four of them so hopefully the others are as good as this one, but I’m obsessed. And I am super picky. You definitely need to order a size or two down. The medium ones washed is the perfect size, super thick. It definitely looks expensive compared to some of those craft store looking sweatshirts. I just wish they had every color in medium. And for those that like a true crewneck, not a wide neck, it is perfect.

I am a fan of good quality sweatshirts and decided to order some of the best. Now it seems that I have conducted a fairly conclusive sweatshirt comparison test and decided to share the results. I purchased 7 sweatshirts and all at retail price from or the lowest priced seller on the Internet. Each sweatshirt was inspected for construction integrity, quality, durability and weighed for cotton weight and then price compared by weight. In other words how much are you paying per pound of cotton? Here are the results of the 3 most notable standard crewneck sweatshirts available. If you need the most severely heavy duty, super solid construction sweatshirt, that is virtually indestructible, then you need to buy the Kellsport crewneck sweatshirt, which is actually 95% cotton-5% poly, but the 5% poly is just blended into the under-side fleece....this garment is constructed like no other sweatshirt on the planet! It will take about a year to break-in with repeated washing, and extra abuse not withstanding! It weighs in at 2.15 pounds for a medium size sweatshirt -Cost: $54.50 - Price/pound = $25.35/lb. If you're looking for the best, standard, crewneck, relatively thick, 100% cotton sweatshirt available, that is well constructed (although lesser quality than was produced by Champion six to eight years ago), then you want to buy the Champion - 'Reverse Weave' sweatshirt (Champion used to produce a 'premium' reverse weave sweatshirt that was the best in the business, because it was 15% to 20% heavier). This version of the reverse weave sweatshirt weighs in at 1.56 pounds for a medium size sweatshirt - Cost: $24.09 - Price/pound = $15.44/lb. So you can see that the Champion 'reverse weave' sweatshirt at $15.44/lb is a considerable bargain compared to the Kellsport at $25.35/lb, but you have to keep in mind that the Kellsport is super heavy duty compared to the lighter weight Champion. The Kellsport is in the league by itself! Lastly the CottonMill sweatshirt. This sweatshirt is definitely comparable to the Champion in terms of it's 100% cotton content and high quality construction, but the cost is through the roof! Is weighs in at 1.43 pounds for a medium size - Cost: $68.00 - Price/pound = a whopping $47.55/lb, which is almost double the cost of the KellSport, which is 43% heavier than the CottonMill. But the real comparison is between Champion and CottonMill, because they are almost identical (except that Champion is a little thicker/heavier). If you buy the CottonMill sweatshirt, you are paying in excess of 3 times the $/lb more then you pay for the Champion sweatshirt. It's a total trip to the cleaners. I wasn't planning on making this comparison a public commentary, but when I saw that the CottonMill quality just didn't deserve the high price that I paid, and was in fact simply egregious over charging, I decided to return it, but they wouldn't take it back, so I decided to warn others from making the same mistake. So if you need indestructible, buy KellSport, need best value and better than average proven durability and longevity, buy Champion 'Reverse Weave', need to look good, be warm and feel like an idiot, buy the CottonMill. This Champion men's max crewneck full athletic fit sweatshirt was included in the comparison, but not mentioned above. It weighed in at 1.11 pounds - Cost: $21.17 - Price/pound = $19.07/lb, so it lost out to it's 'reverse weave' big brother, and so was eliminated from the finals....a loosing Champion

Definitely get this sweatshirt if you're looking for comfort and warmth, but check the size! I usually take an XL in sweatshirts, so figured this would fit perfectly, especially after accounting for shrinkage through washing and use of a T-shirt underneath. Nope. It was way too big before washing, still too big afterwards, and wearing a T-shirt with it didn't make much difference. It became a gift for my brother-in-law who's a bit bigger than me--he loved it! I'll be getting a Large soon . . .

This is my second one of these; the old one is starting to show a little wear around the collar so I decided to pick up a new one. Same quality, same fit. This is a decent thickness sweatshirt and is great on cool days or under a vest on cold ones. I have short arms so the sleeves are a tad long on me but nothing unusual; otherwise this fits true to size.

Love this sweatshirt and wear it to death. The fabric feels tough on the outside but soft on the inside. It is cut full in all the right places for me and allows plenty of room for movement and contortion. The XXL fits just right after washing and drying and shrinking a bit. The bottom hem keeps its shape nicely and stays somewhat tapered. It could be slightly longer since I normally buy tall sizes, but then there is the danger of it being too long for my tastes. The cuffs wear out first but once it starts to get ragged, I use it for work where it is subject to paint and grease spills etc.
